In a market that never closes, rotating a credential is a live migration
Static credential rotation used to be a task for the overnight window. Without one, it becomes a failover on a running system.
- "You're effectively rebuilding the plane while it's in flight. You need to launch another instance, let it catch up, and then fail over at runtime. We can no longer shut the system down at the end of the day, make the change, validate it, and start it back up."
Irreversible settlement raises the stakes on long-lived API keys
Crypto's settlement layer offers no recourse, which raises the stakes on the long-lived API keys still common across venues. Ethan argues the industry should be moving faster toward short-lived credentials, using OAuth or certificate-based authentication.
- "Crypto is a bearer asset. Once assets move onchain, you can't roll it back. In traditional finance, you can usually call the counterparty and reverse the transfer. In crypto, after you transfer it, it's gone."
Identity checks belong outside the order path
Security and speed only compete when the security layer sits inside the trade. Ethan describes a strict split between the control plane and the transactional data plane, with services proving identity before they reach the execution path.
- "Architecture has to be designed so that there aren't extra hops in the trading path."
Infrastructure should authenticate as itself
As automated actors outnumber engineers, secrets management stops scaling.
- "Infrastructure should authenticate with cloud-native identities, not long-lived credentials."
